The Triple Buttress corrie

start: 60 mins by car
walk: 4-5 hrs

Into the Beinn Eighe mountain range you will find this wonderful corrie. It’s a strenous walk, buth the path ascents gently and the scenery is stunning, you feel very little between the giant Liathach and Beinn Eighe on either side. The final climb towards the corrie and the loch is a bit steep, but certainly worth it. Link to start point and route map

An Teallach

walk: 8-9 hrs

An Teallach is one of the most beautiful and iconic mountain ranges in Scotland, and it’s right at the doorstep of Bliss haus. If you are fit enough and are looking for a real challenge, this is a must do. The climb is long and in some places steep, but once you are on the top of the first munro “Bidean a’ Ghlas Thuill” the views of the pinnacles and the other mountains in the remote Fisherfield Forest will simply take your breath away. Shenavall Bothy circuit

start: 35 mins by car
walk: 6-7 hrs

Great hike to an iconic bothy. If you wish, you can stay overnight to immerse yourself in this remote place. Lots of deer around! Link to start point and route map

Slioch

start: 45 mins by car
walk: 8-9 hrs

Slioch is another iconic munro close to Bliss haus. Overlooking Loch Maree and looking inaccessible, the climb of the mountain is a serious one. Especially because of it’s long approach along the delta of Loch Maree. Once the climb starts, you will quickly gain height. Just before the final climb you will pass two beautiful lochans, an ideal spot for an overnight camp on a summer day. On the top of the munro the views in all directions are just stunning: Torridon, Loch Maree, Skye, An Teallach, just to name a few. Makes for a great but very challenging day. Beinn a Chearchaill

walk: 5-6 hrs

This is a so called ‘Fiona’, and with it’s 700 metres it can’t measure itself with the big munros surrounding it. But the plateau makes an ideal setting to view all the big Torridon mountains in all it’s glory. Therefore the hike is rewarding and surely unforgettable. The hike starts at a bungalow on the right side of the road south of Gairloch. The start of the path is very clear, higher up you have to navigate your own way to the plateau. Loch Kernsary

Starting in Poolewe, this is a nice circuit into the Letterewe estate and around the beautiful Loch Kernsary. The loch and the mountain views will give you a good taste of highland scenery. Link to start point and routemap

Beinn Eighe Mountain Trail

start: 50 mins by car
walk: 3 hrs

Great waymarked trail. Steep and exposed climb, but once you’re on the top you have stunning views of the north side of the Beinn Eighe and other Torridon mountains, as well as Slioch across Loch Maree. After passing some wonderful lochs the descent is rewarding with continuing views of beautiful Loch Maree. Last part of the trail goes through the pinewood. Link to start point and route map

Loch Tollie to Slattadale

start: 20 mins by car
walk: 2-3 hrs

Clear trail from the small parking at Loch Tollie. Once you’re up, you will have a great view across Loch Maree. Same way back to the carpark, or you can continue to Slattadale. Link to start point and route map 

Slaggan Bay

start: 14 mins by car
walk: 2-3 hrs

Drive towards Mellon Udrigle and park your car at the small parking place opposite a gate and a sign ‘Slaggan Bay’. The walk follows a track to the desolate Slaggan Bay. You will pass a ruined settlement and in good weather you could even see Skye and the Outer Hebrides. Link to start point and route map

Falls of Balgy

walk: 2-3 hrs

Start from Balgy bridge for this varied walk. First you will pass the Falls of Balgy, and then you will see Loch Damh. Across the road the walk continuous to the shores of Upper Loch Torridon with great views of the Torridon mountains. Link to start point and route map

Diabaig to Craig

start: 1 hr 30 mins by car
walk: 3 hrs

It’s quite a drive to the starting point of this walk, but it is a very scenic route through Glen Torridon and up and down to the remote settlement of Lower Diabaig. The trail is very straightforward and will lead you to a former youth hostel which is turned into a bothy. Great sea views in all directions. Link to start point and route map

Stac Pollaidh

start: 1 hr 20 mins by car
walk: 2-3 hrs

Just a short drive north from Ullapool, you will find this stunning ‘small mountain’. The path is clear, but very steep in places. Once at the top, the views are absolutely fantastic. On a clear day you can see all mountains in the north of Scotland with Suilven being the most iconic. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, as it can be quite windy at the top. Loch na Sealga

start: 16 mins by car
walk: 2-3 hrs

This is a hidden loch in the midst of the Fisherfield Forest. It can be reached from different directions. The best option from Bliss haus is parking the car a bit further from Gruinard Bay on the small parking lot before a bridge. From the bridge, a clear track leads you all the way to the loch. This is a good option when it’s cloudy, because you stay on a low level. The loch gives you a reel sense of highland remoteness.

Forest and falls of Loch Bad na Sgalag

walk: 2-3 hrs

This walk starts from the green shed, located on the road south of Gairloch. The track goes through a reforested area and you will pass some rough and boggy terrain. There are several bridges across the river. Link to start point and route map

Fairy Lochs

start: 30 mins by car
walk: 2-3 hrs

Opposite the Shieldaig Lodge in Badachro lies a parking place. From here the walk starts through some wild terrain with little lochans. On your way you will find the remnants of a World War II airplane together with a war memorial. If it’s wet, this trail can be very very boggy. You can combine this walk with a drink or dinner at the Badachro Inn. Look out for seals in the harbour! Link to start point and route map

Beinn Damph

walk: 5-6 hrs

Great hike to the Beinn Damph corbett. Not as high as the big Torridon mountains, but with greath views towards Glenn Torridon, Applecross and even Sky. The trail starts at the Torridon Hotel in the beautiful Beinn Damph forest. Link to start point and route map

Flowerdale Glenn

Nice waymarked walk through a beautiful glenn and a waterfall. On a clear day you will have views towards Skye. At the end yoou can have a rest and a drink at the Old Inn. Link to start point and route map

Salmon beach and Boom beach

Start from Bliss haus by following the path along the shores of Loch Ewe. Salmon beach is the first beach you will come across. There are some lovely sandy patches. When the tide is low, you can walk further along the rocks. It needs a bit of scrambling, but it’s fun. You will soon reach Boom beach, a beach with an interesting history. Walk back by the road from Mellon Charles.

Gairloch Beach and Pier

This walk starts at the Golf Course parking in Gairloch. It’s an easy but varied walk through the Flowerdale Arboretum with its beautiful and tall trees. Via the Harbour a path goes up over the peninsula to the gorgeous Gairloch Beach. Link to start point and route map

Beinn Eighe Woodland Trail

walk: 60 mins

Short marked trail through the wooded slopes of Beinn Eighe. See the ancient Scots pines up close, with stunning views across Loch Maree and Slioch mountain. Link to start point and route map

Ardessie Falls

Short trail alongside a range of falls. Great views of Little Loch Broom. Link to start point and route map

Mellon Udrigle beach circuit

Laide Wood

Corrieshalloch Gorge

Start from the visitor centre at Braemore junction for a walk through this 60 meters canyon. There is a suspension bridge and a viewing platform. Link to start point and route map

Rubha Reidh lighthouse and cliffs

Visit the Rubha Reidh lighthouse on the tip of the headland from Gairloch. Walk over the cliffs for great views of the beach at Camas Mor. Link to start point and route map

Knockan Crag

Further north from Ullapool the landscape changes. This is an easy walk through the magnificent scenery of Assynt. There is a waymarked trail which tell you all about the geological features of this ancient landscape. Link to start point and route map

Gruinard river and falls

Slattadale and Victoria falls

You can easily combine a short visit to the Victoria falls and a walk around Slattadale with great views of Loch Maree and the island as well as towards the mighty Slioch mountain.

The UNESCO Biosphere designation is an international recognition of the fantastic array of landscapes, wildlife, cultural heritage and learning opportunities that the NW Highlands offers for us all to celebrate and utilise in a sustainable way. Through collaboration, learning and a holistic view on connecting people with nature, Biospheres show that a sustainable way of living is not only possible, but already happening.

Wester Ross is a vast place with a low population density – one of the lowest in Europe, with just 1.6 people per km2. However small though, our communities weave the fabric of life through traditional music, ceilidhs, crofting, and the Gaelic language. Living in Wester Ross is about ‘being active’, ‘feeling immersed’ in the landscape and getting together for events like a local ceilidh, annual loony dook (a swim or jump in the sea, usually in fancy dress on New Year’s Day) or one of the many villages Highland games or gatherings in the summer months. We consider ourselves welcoming and inclusive to visitors.

Equally important to us is our natural heritage. Mountains, trees and seas are the dominating elements of a Wester Ross view. Lochs, glens, sea, rocks, rainbows, waterfalls, dark skies and fresh air complete the broad-brush picture of the landscape. Deer, otters, pine martens and birds of prey are the most mentioned inhabitants of that landscape. Residents clearly value Natural Heritage every bit as much as visitors, and they share a powerful concern for its fragility.

Biospheres are home to dynamic local partnerships, rooted in communities that work collaboratively with Biosphere teams in a global network, to explore how – through education, science, culture, communication and information – we can learn to live in harmony with our environment.

There is a reason why human beings love the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, rain on the roof or birdsong. A raft of research has confirmed that natural light, greenery and views of nature are good for us.

Something that we were really keen to incorporate inside Bliss haus was nature & the outside. We wanted to bring the calmness and happiness that you feel from being outdoors into our design and interiors.

This is called Biophilic Design an innovative way of designing the places where we live, work, and learn to reconnect people with nature, This involves incorporating elements of nature to bring benefits to people, such as lower blood pressure and minimise the production of stress hormones. We all need nature in a deep and fundamental fashion, but we have often designed our cities and suburbs in ways that both degrade the environment and alienate us from nature. Around 87% of our lives are spent indoors & 6% in our cars.

By using this way of designing our spaces, we can help reduce stress to offer a more calming and restorative environment. By using the following elements we can strengthen the connections to nature with the use of light, plants, natural materials, textures, patterns, colours and sound.

Natural light

Exposure to natural light is essential for our energy, mood and sleep and Maximise the amount of natural light coming into your home. Big windows that give a view out to nature, or even a cosy place next to a window to sit, work, read or think. Blinds instead of curtains and keeping any windows clean all give us more natural light.

Natural materials & textiles

Using natural materials like reclaimed wood, wool, clay, cotton and leather using tactile materials gives texture.

Plant

Plants

Cleverly they clean the air that we breathe and provide fresh oxygen, also they have a naturally calming stress busting presence they increase levels of positive energy and help people feel secure and relaxed. Remembering to locate your plants in theareas in which they thrive. Cacti like heaps of sunlight and ferns like to dwell in shady spots.

Sensory Spaces

Make the most of sensory spaces such as bathrooms, with textural contrasts. For example with fluffy towels against cool tiles, plus gentle lighting and calming scents.

Time for us all to dwell in bliss and create spaces that energise, stimulate and connect us with each other, while being calming, relaxing and restorative.
